The Godley Ladycats started the volleyball season on a high note, winning six straight before dropping the final two games in the Grandview Tournament this week.
The Ladycats season opener was on Tuesday against the Dublin Lady Lions. Godley prevailed in three sets (25-22, 25-17, 26-24) to a Dublin squad that fought till the end. With the first game in the books, Godley had until Thursday to prepare for the Grandview tournament, which hosted teams loaded with talent.
Thursday afternoon the Ladycats opened the tournament with pool play, where they went on to win three straight games against less experienced competition. They defeated Blum (25-11, 25-11), Ft. Worth Castleberry (25-14, 25-14), and Connally (25-14, 25-20).
With other pools playing on Friday, Godley had room for another regular season game against Everman. Once again, the Ladycats dominated their competition in three sets, winning (25-12, 25-23, 25-16). Godley was now looking at an unblemished record at 5-0 and still not losing a single set on the season, heading into "Gold Bracket" play in Grandview on Saturday.
In the quarterfinal match on Saturday morning, the Ladycats had to face the Waco University Lady Trojans. The Trojans had the size advantage by far, but that was no match for the excellent hitting performance by Godley. Although the team did lose their first set of the season, the Ladycats came out on top winning the quarterfinal match (25-20, 20-25, 25-19). The next match up in the semifinals for Godley was perennial powerhouse and ninth ranked Jewett Leon. The Ladycats came out in the opening set with spark and energy and won a tough set by the score of 25-21. After the first set was over, the Ladycats fell apart dropping the next two sets 20-25 and 14-24. With the loss Godley was removed from the chance of playing last years state runner-up and rival Brock in the championship, but with third place on the line, next up for Godley was Springtown. The Ladycats came out and shockingly dropped to the Lady Porcupines in two hard fought sets (21-25, 23-25), thus landing the Ladycats in fourth place.
With the week coming to an end, Godley closed their first week of play with a 6-2 record, which is a starting point to what should be another great season for the Ladycats. Tuesday the Ladycats will face Boyd at 5:30 in Godley, with hopes of coming out with another win.

Wildcat Football Preview
Purple chrome alternate helmets |
Last season the Wildcats faced adversity with many injuries, most notable to the three quarterbacks on the squad. Combine that with a jump into class 4A and the season turned out to be a regrouping year. They finished the season with a 4-6 overall record and 2-3 in district play, just missing out on the playoffs.
This year will be totally different.
The Wildcats will have the same schedule as last year, facing Sunnyvale, Ft. Worth Trimble Tech, Bridgeport, Lake Worth, and Mineral Wells before district begins. In District 4-4A play the Wildcats will have some strong competition in Ferris, Dallas Madison, Dallas Lincoln, Dallas Roosevelt, and Venus. The Cat's return seven offensive and eight defensive players from last years squad including newly committed (verbally) senior OL Blake Hickey. Hickey, who committed to Kansas State earlier in the week, will be leading the Wildcats in the trenches for his final season in purple and yellow. The return of the three injured quarterbacks will also help the Wildcats on both sides of the ball this year.
The Wildcats are out for redemption in style this year. They will be wearing their new purple chrome alternate helmets pictured above. A great season is expected from Godley, with expectations as high as ever!
The Wildcats season begins with scrimmages against Maypearl (at Maypearl, Aug. 14) and Gainesville (in Godley, Aug. 20). The season and home opener is against Sunnyvale August 28th 7:30 P.M. at Wildcat Stadium.
Lady Cat Volleyball Preview
The 2015 Lady Cat volleyball team will be loaded with talent and ready for the task of grabbing the district 7-4A crown.
The Lady Cat's return twelve players from last years team in, Sydnee Schofield, Jaycee Pannell, Kaylee White, Beth Danna, Cheyenne Barnes, Sidnee Molloy, Whitney Stegall, Destiny Green, Lindsay Lummus, Jordyn Logan, Hannah Stoy, and Makaila Tyer. With the depth and experience in the roster another good season could be in store for the Lady Cat's.
Last year, the Lady Cat's finished the season with a 7-1 district record, Co-District champions with Kennedale, Area finalist, highest state ranking of No. 14 in 4A, and a 27-11 record overall. While the Cat's did graduate several valuable seniors, this years squad will be up to the task for another playoff run.
This years pre-district schedule is loaded with talented teams and many familiar foes. The Lady Cat's will play experienced teams in Dublin, Joshua, Peaster, Glen Rose, Maypearl, Boyd, Groesbeck, Mineral Wells, and Lake Worth all before district play begins. The Cat's will also be competing in the Grandview, Brewer, and Groesbeck tournaments.
The district schedule this season has a new team, the Midlothian Heritage Leopards will be added to the district in the schools first year of existence. Still, the favorites to win district 7-4A are Godley and Kennedale with dark horses in Alvarado and Heritage High Schools, respectively.
The Lady Cat's kick off their season with scrimmages on August 7th in Weatherford, their season and home-opener is on August 11th against Dublin at 5:00 P.M.
